Unit Code: PHY601
Unit Title: Electronics and Digital Systems
The unit introduces students to the broad area of electronics and digital systems. The basic of direct-current circuits and systems is covered, including Kirchoff’s law for resistance networks. Binary and hexadecimal number systems are also covered. The fundamental ideas of electronics are then introduced, leading to a study of diodes, transistors and other basic electronic devices. Logic gates are then covered in detail and Boolean law is explained. Electronic circuits such as filters, amplifiers, registers and counters are detailed. The theory of analog to digital, and its converse, digital to analog systems are discussed. The unit then focuses on electronic systems such as computers, using block, schematic and circuit diagrams. The unit finishes with a study of large-scale integration of electronic circuitry and considers a few case studies of digital devices.
