Unit Title: Silviculture
This unit provides a framework to learn the basic concept of silviculture and its importance in forestry. The instructional areas cover the following; the foundation of silviculture, the tropical rainforest distribution, the plantation and seed technology, the role of plantation forest in the Solomon Islands, forest tree seed technology, the forest nursery protocols, health protection of plants, the establishment of forest nursery and raising of plantation species, the development operations regarding the site and species matching, and plantation site preparation.
The second part of the unit will introduce to students the protocols and importance of tending, pruning and thinning operations, forest measurements, a control system for forest operations, the significance of forestry tool calibrations, forestry extension and its services, land-use planning, marketing and forest plantation management.
