Unit Title: Language in Multi-lingual Setting
This course provides in-depth coverage of language in multilingual settings. It introduces the phenomenon of multilingualism, its implications on the language situation of a country, with specific reference to Solomon Islands and Pacific context. The course describes language concepts and issues relevant to multilingual settings, and it addresses the challenges these pose to the teaching and learning of language to multilingual learners. Topics covered include key concepts of multilingualism, multilingual societies – the context of Solomon Islands, language development theories, acquisition, policy and language issues in multilingual settings, and English literacy instruction in multilingual classrooms. The overall focus of the course is to teach students knowledge and skills necessary for teaching and learning English in multilingual settings.
