Unit Title: Trends, Issues and Challenges of Teaching Primary Science in Solomon Islands
This unit offers students an opportunity to reflect on both international and local trends, issues and challenges in primary science. The unit begins with exploring the role of science as an authentic context for learning and teaching across the curriculum in primary school settings. Students will be provided with an opportunity to explore the current trends in science education by analyzing researches done in the last ten years in science education journals. Science teacher education, teaching and assessing, science curriculum materials and resources, learning conceptions, learning context, roles of ICT in science teaching and teaching, innovation, creativity and critical thinking in science teaching and learning, gender and science are some issues and challenges that will be discussed in this unit. Among other issues examined will be the issue of misconceptions held by teachers and students and science beyond the classroom.
