The Solomon Islands National University (SINU) Council Secretariat, in collaboration with the Department of Campus Life, Marketing and Public Relations, Finance Department, and Security Department, successfully held an induction session today for the newly elected executive members of the SINU Students Association (SINUSA).
The session aimed to provide the new student leaders with a clear understanding of the Universityโ€™s governance structure, student life policies, and key financial and procurement processes. It was an important step in strengthening collaboration between SINUSA and the University, ensuring the executive is well-equipped to represent the student body effectively.
Mr. Samson Bisafo, Manager of Business Investment and Commercial Services (BICS) and Acting Manager of Campus Life, welcomed the executive and congratulated them on their election. He acknowledged the importance of student leadership, adding that, โ€œSINUSA now has a new home, which will enable them to effectively perform their roles and better serve the student body.โ€
Aruana Runimetu Manager Council Secretariat, emphasized the importance of student participation in University governance, stating, โ€œSINUSA is established under Section 36 of the SINU Act and is not a separate entity from the University.โ€ She further reiterated SINUโ€™s commitment to ensuring student representation in its highest decision-making bodies, reflecting a strong dedication to inclusive governance.
Addressing the executive, Mr. Edward Biku emphasized the importance of understanding their constitutional role and the opportunity to improve the SINUSA Constitution. He highlighted that the Constitution, last reviewed in 2013, is due for an update and shared that a committee will be formed to begin this important revision in collaboration with his team. He also encouraged the executive to effectively channel student issues to the SINU Council through the designated student representative, ensuring strong communication and advocacy for students.
Ms. Renee Bisili from the Marketing and Public Relations Office encouraged open and consistent communication between SINUSA and University departments. She also highlighted the important role of the media in promoting student activities. Ms. Bisili urged SINUSA and all students to work together as a team to further enhance SINUโ€™s image as a student-centered institution.
Mr. Watson Buare from the Finance Department provided an overview of the Universityโ€™s financial procedures. He highlighted the importance of transparency and accountability, encouraging SINUSA to follow standard financial practices, such as producing annual and quarterly reports and ensuring regular financial audits.
In response, the SINUSA executive thanked the University for organizing the induction. They shared that the session gave them greater clarity on University policies and processes, and acknowledged some initial challenges during their transition.Despite this, they reaffirmed their commitment to serve with transparency, adhere to policies and procedures, and act in the best interests of the student body in line with their constitutional mandate.
This induction not only marked the beginning of a stronger working relationship between SINUSA and SINU management but also laid a solid foundation for transparent, accountable, and collaborative student governance.
