About Us
Solomon Islands National University (SINU) was established on 1 January 2013 following the passage of the SINU Act by Parliament in late 2012. Prior to its establishment, the country's higher education and training needs were primarily met through the Solomon Islands College of Higher Education (SICHE), which was formed under the Solomon Islands College of Higher Education Act 1984. SICHE brought together several government training institutions, including the Solomon Islands Teachers College, Public Administration Training School, Ranadi Marine Training School, Honiara Nursing Training School, and Honiara Technical Institute. These institutions later evolved into schools that formed the foundation of today's university.
In 2008, SICHE expanded its scope through legislative amendments that enabled the establishment of additional schools, including Tourism and Hospitality and Humanities, Science and Media. These developments eventually led to the creation of five schools that became the basis for SINU's current academic structure.
Today, SINU is the national university of Solomon Islands, comprising five faculties: the Faculty of Business & Tourism Studies, Faculty of Science & Technology, Faculty of Nursing, Medicine & Health Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture, Fisheries & Forestry, and Faculty of Education & Humanities. The University operates across three campusesโKukum, Ranadi, and Panatinaโand includes specialized institutions and centres such as the Solomon Islands Maritime College (SIMC), SINU Technical and Further Education (TAFE), University Preparatory College (UPC), Centre for Distance and Flexible Learning (CDFL), Centre of Excellence in Information Technology (CEIT), and the Centre for Islands Future (CIF).
SINU offers programmes from certificate and diploma levels through to undergraduate, postgraduate studies and Master's program and is supported by academic, research, innovation, and student support services. Through teaching, skills training, research, and community engagement, SINU continues to play a vital role in developing the human resources and future leaders of Solomon Islands.
