Greetings everyone!
Wednesday, 21 February 2024, a special event to mark International Mother Language Day will be held at SINU Panatina Campus. Hosted by SINU in partnership with MEHRD and Solomon Islands Translation Advisory Group (SITAG), the event will be held at Panatina Campus Pavilion. Organisations involved in vernacular language development will have displays and be on hand to share how they are supporting vernacular language use. Interactive displays will provide an opportunity for visitors to learn more about Solomon Islands languages. The Pavilion will be open by 10:00 am and students, faculty and the public are invited to come.
The main programme will start at 12:00 pm and an International Mother Language Day Tok Stori Programme will be held. A short history of International Mother Language Day will be shared as well as some important messages from SINU and MEHRD about efforts to support the vernacular languages of the Solomon Islands. A language poem will be read and SINU students will perform a flag dance. Literacy Consultant, Timothy Matzke (SITAG) will make a presentation on language vitality and the languages of the Solomon Islands. A special emphasis will include how multilingual education can impact language vitality. A question and answer time will follow.
Everyone is invited to come and be a part of this important celebration of the linguistic diversity of the Solomon Islands.
