As part of their hands-on learning experience, History teacher trainees from the Faculty of Education and Humanities at the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) visited the Solomon Islands National Museum on Friday, 28th March. The visit aimed to offer the trainees firsthand exposure to historical artifacts, narratives, and interpretations of the nationโs history. This experience will deepen their understanding of key events that shaped the Solomon Islands and provide valuable insights for their upcoming History assessments. Furthermore, the visit enhances their ability to incorporate historical exhibits into their future teaching practices.
A total of 40 teacher trainees participated in guided tours of the museumโs two main galleries โ the History & Culture Gallery and the Prehistory & Archaeological Gallery, led by museum staff.
For many of the trainees, this was their first visit to the museum, and some were unaware that it was open to the public. One student shared that the experience helped him feel a deeper connection to the past through the photographs and artifacts on display.
Another student recognized her grandfather and uncle in one of the photographs, sparking excitement and prompting her to share stories about her grandfatherโs role as a priest in the pre-Christianity religion. She spoke of the respect and awe her grandfather commanded within his community. Witnessing such personal connections to history was both thrilling and inspiring.
This visit not only enriched the studentsโ understanding of historical research but also sparked fresh ideas for their future careers in teaching. The History Department looks forward to organizing more experiential learning opportunities in the future.
