The Vice Chancellor of Solomon Islands National University (SINU), Professor Transform Aqorau, warmly welcomed the Vice Chancellor of James Cook University (JCU), Professor Simon Biggs, to a high-level meeting held today. The meeting explored a broad range of issues of mutual interest, focusing on support for the accreditation of SINU programmes and professional development opportunities for SINU staff.
James Cook University, located in the tropical northern region of Australia, shares many environmental challenges with the Solomon Islands. The University has a long history of conducting collaborative research in the Solomon Islands and other Pacific Islands. Professor Simon Biggs was accompanied by Ms Toni Lawrence, Director of JCU Advancement. Also in attendance were Dr. Eric Katovai, Acting Pro Vice Chancellor Academic, and Dr. Humpress Harrington, Dean of the Faculty of Nursing, Medicine and Health Sciences (FNHMS), both of whom are distinguished PhD graduates from James Cook University.
The discussions underscored the importance of academic collaboration in enhancing educational standards and fostering research initiatives. The two institutions are poised to build on their shared history of collaboration to advance the quality of higher education and research in the Pacific region.

Professor Transform Aqorau expressed his enthusiasm for the meeting, stating, “It is a great privilege to host Professor Simon Biggs and Ms Toni Lawrence from James Cook University at SINU. This meeting marks a significant step forward in strengthening our partnership, which is vital for the accreditation of our programmes and the professional development of our staff. The support from James Cook University, a major regional University, is invaluable for SINU as we strive to enhance our educational standards and contribute meaningfully to the development of the Solomon Islands.”

The meeting concluded with a commitment from both universities to continue their collaborative efforts and to explore new opportunities for partnership in research, teaching, and community engagement. The discussions highlighted the shared vision of SINU and JCU in addressing environmental challenges, promoting sustainable development, and improving the quality of life in the Pacific region through education and research.
