Unit Code: PHY501

Unit TitleFundamentals of Physics

This unit introduces students to classical physics, starting with motion, including uniformly accelerated, rotational and circular motions. This is followed by a study of projectile motion. Students then learn about force, torque, momentum and energy conservation. Problems dealing with motion on an inclined plane, hanging mass and conservation of torque are discussed. Simple harmonic motion is then considered. Basic optics is then dealt with and the unit concludes with description and examples of wave motion. The unit concludes by studying thermodynamics, ideal engines and real engines. Various experiments are carried out to reinforce lecture materials.
