Unit Title: Introduction to Linguistics

This course offers a contextualized approach to the study of linguistics, or languages, with specific focus on areas such as the nature of human language, grammar and its grammatical aspects, language and change, language acquisition, language and culture, and language in our education system.  While the course attempts to maintain a balance between knowledge of local languages, and English, the target language for learning in this course is English, therefore, emphasis will be on the basic components of the English language study, including Grammar, language as texts and discourse, the practice of English language teaching, and the evolving nature of the English language. The final section looks at the place of language and literacy teaching and learning in Solomon Islands Education System.
