Unit Title: Surveying and Forest Roads

The first part of the unit provides students with the basic skills of using and handling survey instruments within the forest industry. The instructional areas cover the following: using of a compass, mapping and surveying, accurate and proper recording of data, survey log bookkeeping, use of plotting instruments, recognizing and rectifying errors, calculation of area using mapping skills (using dot grids, dots counting, identifying meter per dot,) use of Vernier scale and basic introduction to GPS system and application.

In the second part of the unit covers forest road planning and construction. Following are the instructional areas: forest roads assessment, alignment procedures and constructions, road construction tools and equipment, and planning and maintenance.
