Unit Title: Curriculum and Assessment
This unit aims to assist teacher trainees to understand crucial aspects of the Solomon Islands early childhood education curriculum. The unit will encourage teacher trainees to reflect on and consider the purpose and principles of assessment underpinning important aspects of planning and teaching the curriculum in an early childhood education setting. Also, trainees will be required to discuss and analyse elements and processes appropriate to be included in an effective early childhood education programme. Trainees will learn the underlying philosophy of the Solomon Islands national curriculum in relation to the general principles of curriculum development. They will reflect on how the purposes and principles of assessment underpin important aspects of teaching practices for implementing the curriculum in early childhood education. Trainees will be helped to understand and use observation as a tool for assessing childrenβs learning and development, using an integrated approach to planning in the early childhood education setting.
