Unit Title: Waste Management and Pollution Control

This course provides an introduction to the types of wastes, their sources and pollution to the environment. Students will learn methods of carrying out steps in solid-waste and waste reduction at source, health and environmental issues related to solid waste management, collection techniques, materials and resource recovery (using the 4 R’s), optimization of solid waste transport, Disposal and treatment techniques (compost, vermin compost, energy recovery, thermal techniques and land-filling, integrated waste management and waste management policy. Students will be able to design a waste management action plan which is more practical and relevant to local settings.
