Higher Education Diploma in Library and Information Systems
These two programmes are offered by the Department of Library in collaboration with the School of Humanities at the Faculty of Education & Humanities. The programmes contain a breadth of topics across the discipline of Library & Information Systems, reviewing the wide area of the discipline with an emphasis on national and regional requirements. In these programmes, Library Science is at the center of focus. Simultaneously, many units will focus on the relating understanding of the information system as well.
Aims & Objectives
Entry Requirements
The minimum entry requirement for admission to Higher Education Certificate – Level 3

Satisfactory completion of Form 5 with passes in Maths and English.

Satisfactory completion of Form 3 with at least five years of relevant work experience.

Successful completion of a recognized programme of study
The minimum entry requirement for admission to Higher Education Diploma – Level 4

Satisfactory completion of Form 6.

Successful completion of the Certificate in Library & Information Systems.

Satisfactory completion of Form V with at least three years of relevant work experience.

Dr. Don Karunanayake (Associate Professor/ Director of Libraries)
Dip, (Russia), BA, (Sri Lanka) MA, (Sri Lanka) MLS, (Sri Lanka) PhD, (Japan)
Dr. Don Karunanayake is the Head of the Department of Library & Information System at the School of Humanities of the Faculty of Education & Humanities at Solomon Islands National University (SINU).
Before joining SINU, he worked in different universities in Fiji and Sri Lanka as a Lecturer in Library & Information Sciences. He coordinated Certificate, Diploma and Bachelors programme in Library & Information Systems at the Fiji National University. Also, he coordinated the MPhil/Ph.D. programme in Library & Information Science at the University of Colombo - Sri Lanka. He worked as a researcher at the University of Tsukuba - Japan from 2005-2010. He is a member of the reviewing panel of Asia Pacific Library and Information, Education and Practice-Manila- Philippines and “IAFOR Journal of Literature and Librarianship - Japan.
He holds a Ph.D. in Library & Information Science from the University of Tsukuba - Japan, Double Master degrees from the University of Colombo and the University of Kelaniya - Sri Lanka. Diploma at the University of Pushkin - Moscow - Russia.
He published several peer-reviewed journal articles and textbooks in the areas of Library & Information Sciences.
